I have very little experience with Brazilian food that is the forte of the Bovino’s restaurant in Chatan, but decided to give it a try upon endless recommendations from friends. Emboldened by the likelihood that I have Portuguese blood from my mother’s side – Portugal colonized Taiwan hundreds of years ago – I entered the restaurant on a recent rainy afternoon to enjoy succulent meats served table side off of a skewer, authentic Brazilian cuisine, and the Samba girls. Now, those Samba girls usually only make their appearance on Thursday nights but I did fall in love with the flavorful pork, beef, chicken, and pineapple served from a skewer.

Bovino’s is the only authentic Brazilian restaurant in Okinawa that I know of. It’s main attraction is its buffet lunches and dinners that include its signature all you can eat Brazilian meats. Each item is served by a sizable wait staff that constantly walks around with large skewers of sirloin, chicken, beef neck, pork loin, sausage and chicken hearts just to name a few. Roast pineapple and plantains are also served in the same manner as a dessert. The buffet includes a salad bar, as well as Brazilian rice, beans, curry, fish and other marinated meats – the buffet selections change slightly each day. Summon the staff to reload on meat off of the skewer anytime you like during your meal. They will slice as much as you like and come back as often as desired.

The lunch buffet on weekdays is 1,500 yen with the skewer service and about 1,100 yen without it; add 300 yen for adults for lunch meals on the weekends; subtract 200 yen from the adult prices for children 5 ~ 12. The dinner buffet is about 3,300 yen for adults (buffet and skewer service) while children 5 ~ 12 are only about 1,400 yen each. The main difference between the lunch and dinner meals is the amount of buffet items and skewer items offered. There is a 60 minute time limit during lunch and 90 minutes during dinner.

Bovino’s is a bit expensive but the skewer service is a unique experience that features high quality predominately imported Brazilian meats that are different from anything else I have tasted before. I look forward to seeing the Samba girls sometime in the near future.

Bovino’s is open for lunch 11:00–14:30 (until 15:00 on weekends) and for dinner 18:00–22:30 (starting at 17:00 on weekends). There is a full service bar inside the restaurant.

Getting there

Bovino’s is located in Chatan’s Hamby Town neighborhood. The easiest way to get there is to drive to the intersection of routes 130 and 58 in Chatan, then go west to the first intersection and go left, and finally look for the restaurant on the right about 50 meters down the road.
